France will start stopping small boats in English Channel after British demands

France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.

French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.

"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."

Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.

Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to disable the propellers of the vessels.

The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from government.

That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.

Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.

The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
