Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the right to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
